Board Width

Hardwood floors are manufactured in a variety of widths. Choose your floor to coordinate with your décor.

STRIP FLOORING

Prefinished and unfinished strip flooring is available in both 1 ½” and 2 ¼” widths. The most common strip is a 2 ¼” width. Strip is sold by the carton or bundle, with each shipping unit containing the same width. However, strip can be installed in random widths, which would require ordering multiple cartons or bundles, each of different widths.

PLANK FLOORING

The most common prefinished and unfinished plank is a 3” width. However, planks are also available in individual cartons or bundles of 3¼”, 4”, 5”, 6” and 7” widths. Plank flooring can be installed in random widths, with the most popular combination being 3”, 5” and 7” widths. Installation of plank in random widths would require ordering multiple cartons or bundles, each of different widths.

CUSTOM FLOORING

Single slats or “shorts” are strip flooring in customized lengths to create squares or patterns known as parquet flooring. You can design borders and/or medallions around your strip or plank floors, or chose from manufacturer created parquets and medallions in prefinished and unfinished. Using any combination of species you desire can create some special designs.

If you are wondering which hardwood floor is right for you, consider the following points to assist in selection of the right floor for you.

Choosing the Right Construction Type

Hardwood floors are manufactured in a variety of constructions that make it possible to install a hardwood floor in almost any room. The location of your room (on, above, or below the outside soil line) and the type of subfloor (wood, concrete, slate, etc.) will determine which type of hardwood flooring product you should select. There are three basic types of hardwood floor construction.

Solid

  • Made from 100% solid hardwood
  • Most commonly 3/4" thick, also comes 5/16" in thickness
  • Most commonly 2 1/4" wide, also comes 1 1/2" strips to 7" planks.  Lengths from 12" to 84"
  • Can only be installed over a plywood or wood subfloor
  • Install only in rooms that are on or above ground level only
  • Nail or staple installation only
  • Precision-milled, tongue-and-groove construction locks each piece of wood tightly in position
  • 100% solid wood construction provides beautifully clean, clear-grain definition

Engineered

  • Multiple layers of hardwood assembled in a cross-grained construction for superior dimensional stability
  • Range in thickness from 1/4" to 9/16"
  • Range in widths from 2 1/4" to 7". Lengths from 12" to 60"
  • Can be installed over most subfloors, including concrete
  • Install at any grade level…on, above or below the outside soil line
  • Glue, nail or staple-down installation
  • Precision tongue-and-groove construction locks each piece of wood firmly in position

Longstrip

  • Multiple layers of hardwood assembled in a cross-grained construction for superior dimensional stability
  • Solid Laminated top layer 1/7" in width
  • Approximately 9/16" thick, 7 1/2" wide and 8’ in length
  • Can be installed over almost any surface from concrete to vinyl

Edge Styles

Edge Styles help establish the character of your floor.

Square Edge

A square edge boards fit flush against each other for a smooth surface that blends the floor together from board to board. The overall look of this floor gives a contemporary flair and formal feeling to the room

Beveled Edge

A full bevel edge or micro bevel edge creates an angled effect where boards meet; lending a handcrafted and more defined look. Also, a full bevel edge or micro bevel edge is used to help hide minor irregularities, such as uneven plank heights.
